Seems like everyone is getting into RC helicopters these days. They are a fascinating flying machine and in the RC world there are so many different types of them now. Micro helis, fixed pitch, 3D, tandem rotor, coaxial and even more. If you are new to helicopters check out all the information on this site and it will teach you all the basics from choosing the right helicopter for your skill level, to setting up your helicopter, to teaching you how to fly!
Choosing the right helicopter and learning to fly it can be kinda' intimidating and I think it scares off some would be RC heli pilots. I want to change all that. I have flown all the major types of helicopters from fixed pitch w/electric tail rotor, to co-axial, to the full function 6 channel CCPM helicopters. This experience has shown me that for someone starting out with RC helicopters I think the quickest and cheapest path to flying a 6 channel helicopter with confidence is to buy a co-axial helicopter.
These helicopters let you get your coordination and orientation skills nailed down first. When they do crash, and they will, because no one is perfect, they are cheap and easy to repair. Their design makes them inherently stable so the over-corrections of a new pilot won't send them straight to the ground.
Below is a video series that will break apart the skills needed to fly an RC helicopter and show you how to practice them separately. Then I'll show you how to slowly layer the skills until you can finally put all the skills together to fly your helicopter however you want. I feel the #1 cause of most crashes with an RC helicopter are due to impatience. It's so tempting to take it out of the box, give it full throttle and hope for the best. This usually ends up with a broken helicopter and an expensive trip to the hobby store.
